Transportation in North Cyprus
North Cyprus is an amazing place to visit with so much to see and do; because of this the best way to travel is to hire a rental car. If you are travelling from the UK or Ireland, driving will be just the same as being at home. The speed restrictions are in kilometres and Cypriots drive on the left hand side of the road too.
Traffic Rules in North Cyprus
Traffic rules and regulations are just the same as UK as cars should be driven on the left and all the rentals are right hand drive. Speeding is limited between 50 to 65 kilometres and 100 kilometres on the motorways. We advise you to watch the speed cameras as they are very common all over North Cyprus.
North Cyprus Drink-Drive Laws
In North Cyprus there are very strict drink driving regulations and if caught, you will receive a very large on the spot fine as there is zero tolerance for alcohol. These drink drive laws are very similar to those in England, so if you do have a hire car we advise to drive the rental car with no alcohol.
Parking in North Cyprus
Car parking in North Cyprus is easy and cheap. In major towns there are special car parking areas and municipal car parks. Parking in the municipal car parks is a very cheap and convenient way of parking. It is forbidden to park on double yellow lines, and there may also be a 'no parking' sign. Otherwise you can generally park your North Cyprus rental car wherever you see an available space except on the motorways.
Northern Cyprus Road Signs
In North Cyprus, road signs are worded in Turkish, but most signs are easily recognizable. Indicators are not widely used, so you should always be aware of the car in front of you as they can turn at any moment. Car horns are frequently used so you will get very used to the sound of these! As with driving in any country, if you obey the rules of the road while driving your hire car from Trip Rent A Car, you will be fine.
Bus Services and Public Transport
They are usually minibuses or old Mercedes which connect most of the major villages and towns. You can spot minibuses versions by the destination boards on the dashboard or two red give way triangles in the rear window. They run from early morning to early evening about every half an hour. In Kyrenia, public transport is available, and fares are very cheap, usually amounting to no more than a pound and you pay the driver when you get on. However the driver will go when he decides to, so make sure that you ask him when he returns. Otherwise you can be late for dinner ! Of course, if you have car hire in North Cyprus from Trip Rent A Car, you won't need to worry about this, of course, you can just drive home via a lovely local restaurant and arrive home whenever you like!
